Admission Requirements for Transfer Students

Please note: students who are not transferring or have not been out of high school for more than a year should refer to the new student admission requirements.

Students are considered transfer students if they have attempted eight semester (or 12 quarter) hours after high school at a regionally accredited college or university other than UT. Students currently in high school with post-secondary credit are not transfer students and new student admission criteria apply. Students not meeting the admission standards may be required to participate in the ASE program and may be able to appeal the admission decision.

College of Arts and Sciences

Transfer students admitted to requested major with a 2.0 cumulative GPA of all higher education course work except:

Premedical, predental, preveterinary programs:

  • require 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA

Music program:

  • Audition required (contact 419.530.2448 to schedule an audition)

College of Business Administration

Transfer students admitted to requested major with a 2.25 cumulative GPA of all higher education course work.

College of Education

Overall cumulative transfer GPA requirements for transfer students are based on class rank:

Education Majors: GPA Requirements
Rank Semester Hours Required GPA
Freshman 0-29.9 2.2 or above
Sophomore 30-59.9 2.3 or above
Junior 60-89.9 2.7 or above (overall and in chosen major)
Senior 90+ 2.7 or above (overall and in chosen major)

College of Engineering*

Transfer students admitted to requested engineering science major with a:

  • 2.75 overall college cumulative GPA
  • "C" or better in college calculus equivalent to MATH 1850 and general chemistry equivalent to CHEM 1230 at UT

* Students not meeting the minimum requirements for bachelor of science in engineering programs will be reviewed for the bachelor of science in engineering technology programs provided they have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, or may choose another program. Transfer students cannot enter the College of Engineering as undecided.

College of Health Science and Human Service

Transfer students admitted to requested major with a 2.0 cumulative GPA of all higher education course work except:

Cardiovascular technology:

  • Students are encouraged to meet with an adviser upon admission to determine curriculum requirements that need to be satisfied prior to the competitive admission process for selection to the cardiovascular program.

Health-care administration program:

  • Students are admitted to the College as undecided. Upon completion of an associate degree in an allied health area, students will be considered for the bachelor's program.

PrePhysical therapy program:

  • Students are admitted into the exercise science program with a concentration in pre-physical therapy. Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students will be eligible to apply to institutions offering the graduate professional sequence.

Respiratory Care program:

  • Students are admitted into pre-respiratory curriculum. Upon completion, there is a competitive admission process for the professional sequence.

College of Nursing

Nursing associate program:

  • Students are admitted into pre-nursing curriculum. Upon completion, there is a competitive admission process for the professional sequence.

Nursing baccalaureate program:

  • 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Successful completion of high school chemistry with a "C" or better

College of Pharmacy*

Transfer students are admitted into a pre-pharmacy program and cannot be automatically admitted into the professional division, regardless of credits earned at other institutions. The College considers applicants to the professional division only from second-year pre-pharmacy students currently enrolled at UT. Pharmaceutical sciences and doctor of pharmacy programs require:

  • 2.7 cumulative GPA
  • Students who are not Ohio residents and/or have completed course work at a non-Ohio institution will be considered on an individual basis. However, the admission committee rarely considers out-of-state applicants with a cumulative GPA below 3.0.

* Students are encouraged to apply for fall term— application materials must be received no later than May 1 for admission consideration for summer or fall semester of the same year.

Undecided Students

Students who have a specific college preference but are undecided on a specific major within that college may apply as undecided to that college. Transfer students cannot enter the College of Engineering as undecided. Students who are undecided about their college and major who have a 2.0 overall cumulative GPA will be admitted into the QUEST program in the Student Success Center.

University College

Students admitted to requested major with a 2.0 cumulative GPA of all higher education course work. Students who are 25 or older may qualify for admission to the adult liberal studies program designed to help accelerate degree completion for adult students if they have a 2.0 overall cumulative GPA
