Interdisciplinary Studies
The interdisciplinary programs of the College of Arts and Sciences combine the insights of two or more fields of study. While they may use the methods of the traditional fields of study, they broaden and reorganize knowledge and research along new lines and thereby create new perspectives that do not belong to either or any of the standard disciplines. Interdisciplinary subjects the traditional approaches of academic study to contest, debate, and transformation so that the basic questions of scholarly inquiry are reformed. As Gayatri Spivak put it, “It is the questions we ask that produce the field of inquiry and not some body of materials that determine what questions need to be posed.”
