Graduate Studies

Program Requirements

The study of materials spans the broad spectrum from the fabrication and electronic properties of materials used in integrated circuits, to the corrosion and mechanical properties of the iron and steel used in buildings and bridges. Clearly, the breadth of this subject requires a unique educational approach. At the University of Toledo, materials science is truly interdisciplinary with several different departments in both the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering offering Materials Concentrations with programs tailored to the specific needs of their students. Central to the overall graduate program are two core materials science courses which provide a general literacy in common areas of the subject for students in all seven departments, including those with no undergraduate background in the subject.

The two core courses are cross-listed as:

PHYS 6/8540,CHEM 6/8810, EEES 6540 Materials Science I 3

Structure, Defects and Diffusion

PHYS 6/8550, CHEM 6/8820, EEES 6550 Materials Science II 3
Thermodynamics & Phase Transformations in Condensed Systems

M.S. Materials Concentration

At the M.S. level, the concentration is available in:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Earth, Ecological & Environmental Sciences
  • Bioengineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering & Computer Science
  • Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering

The two core courses are required, or their equivalent.
