Graduate Student Attendance at the Departmental Colloquium Series
All full-time, resident MS and PhD graduate students are required to attend at least 75 percent of the guest lectures in the Departmental Colloquium Series (formerly the EEES 6930 Seminar course) every semester over the period during which they hold an assistantship, which is normally 2 years (or 4 semesters not including summers) for MS students and 4 years for PhD students (or 8 semesters not including summers). This policy applies both to students who were enrolled in EEES 6930 in the past as well as those who were not. Students failing to meet this requirement will not be allowed to graduate unless the GAC allows them to make up the deficiency by other equivalent means, such as attending other relevant lectures at UT including, but not limited to, those in the Lake Erie Research Center and Department of Biological Sciences. In such cases, the student must provide verification of their attendance and normally this will require a written note from the lecture coordinator. The substitution of other lectures for those missed in the Departmental Colloquium Series is on a one-for-one basis.
Faculty coordinators for the Departmental Colloquium Series will maintain semester attendance records for all graduate students and each semester provide the departmental Graduate Adviser with a copy of these records. Students are responsible for maintaining their own attendance records in order to gauge their compliance with this policy.
Continued financial support for a student is contingent upon their making good academic progress in their program of study, and attending lectures in the Departmental Colloquium Series is part of the expected progress. It is also expected that faculty research advisers will make all reasonable efforts to see that their students adhere to this requirement.
This policy will be effective beginning Spring 2008 and will apply to all graduate students.
