Arnette Hawkins, Ph.D. Student
Arnette Hawkins, a fourth year Ph.D. student, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Ancient History at The University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. After a career in domestic and international banking, Arnette decided to make a career change into teaching. She received the dual Master of Arts and Education degree from the University of Toledo in May 2004 and holds an Ohio teaching license in Integrated Social Studies, grades 7-12. She spent three years as a substitute teacher with the Sylvania Board of Education while working on her degree.
Arnette's master's thesis, "Raising our Glass: A Study of Saloons in Toledo, Ohio from 1880 to 1919" examined the social and political contributions of the saloon to the city of Toledo in the years preceding Prohibition. She has successfully completed the comprehensive examinations for the Ph.D. and is the recipient of the 2007 Lloyd and Betty Lapp Award for Outstanding Graduate Student.
Arnette was inducted into the Alpha Kappa chapter of Phi Alpha Theta in 2002 and served as the 2007-2008 President.
Arnette was the graduate student member of the Executive Board of the Catherine Eberly Center for Women in 2005-2006 and was elected President of the Board in 2006 for a four-year term.
Arnette’s primary field of study is American history, focusing on urban, gilded age and progressive history. She has completed the course work her minor field in Russian history.
