Education

The education portion of the Lake Erie Center's mission
is to:

  • Facilitate research and environmental education experiences for graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Engage secondary school students and the public in environmental education and informed awareness programs.

Fulfilling the education part of our mission, the Lake Erie Center (LEC):

  • Is home to 15 resident full-time year-round graduate students and hosts about a dozen others during the field season.
  • Manages a robust NSF GK-12 program that partners advanced graduate students with local high school teachers and students.
  • Serves as the base for 10-12 undergraduate student researchers, including the NSF-sponsored summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program.
  • Offers a popular monthly public lecture series.
  • Hosts advanced undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including intensive 1 week summer courses.
  • Participates in environmental science education mentoring and shadowing programs.
  • Is the meeting place for numerous environmental groups.
