When you want to share you files over the network you need to mount the shared drive. Saving your information on the shared drive makes it available to anyone you wish to give access to the data. As well you can access this data from any other computer on the network. Data stored on the shared drive is backed up every 2 week, the data backup from 2 weeks previous is shuffled back and held for 2 more weeks before getting displaced by the next backup.
Sharing files with off campus computers must utilize either SCP or FTP. If you have need to share files directly email me and I can assist you in connecting to you shared drive off campus with windows.
To share or Mount a drive through windows you need to go to My Computer: (see below)
Click on the Tools in the window and the menu will show Map Network Drive... (see below)
You will then see a window like the one below you will have to enter which drive letter you want this mounted shared drive to have in your computer. (Note if you have other shared drives you may get a warning that you are about to reassign the drive already assigned. Either cancel and choose another drive letter or go ahead and overwrite the drive assignment.
In the lower box fill in the share directory in the box below note there is only the server and not the shared directory, this will return an error of not found type in \\glec.le.utoledo.edu\Research or \\glec.le.utoledo.edu\Lakedata or another shared directory name you have access privilege. Contact me if you need help.
Once the shared directory is found you will be interrogated for you username and password (see below). Again, Contact Me if you need access or don't have proper permissions to read or write to a specific directory.
Several problems can hold up this process. If you are off campus, meaning your are not in the University Network (i.e. your IP address doesn't start with 131.183... ) you need to access you files in another manner so Contact Me and I will assist you. Don't use "utad/username" This system is independent of the UTAD administration.
The server is a Unix server using an SMB share protocol. Virus and Trojans will not directly impact the host system, however you can deliver and receive malicious code through the shared directory, it is up to you to insure that your computer is protected with an up-to-date virus protection software. If you need assistance Contact Me.
To get an account and assistance in setting up these services email me Jim for info at LEC.
