Ilana Iwens Kennell, Piano, Coordinator of Class Piano and Piano Pedagogy at The University of Toledo, received degrees from Northwestern University, studying piano with Gui Mombaerts, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she worked with members of the Fine Arts Quartet in chamber music, as well as pianists Armand Basile and Andreas Marchand. She has previously taught at Bowling Green State University, the University of Findlay, and the University of Wisconsin Summer Music Institute. She taught for 10 summers at Interlochen Arts Camp as coordinator of group piano and piano ensembles.
Mrs. Kennell is a member of the College Music Society, Sigma Alpha Iota, and a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music by Music Teachers National Association. She serves as faculty advisor for the UT student chapter of MTNA, and was the NW District of Ohio Music Teachers Association's (OMTA) NCTM Teacher of the Year for 2003. In 2005, she was named NCTM Teacher of the year for the state of Ohio.
She has recorded on the Access and Orion labels, been heard on National and American Public Radio in recordings of contemporary chamber music, as well as in the Toledo Symphony's Music Today series. As a duo-pianist, she has been a first prize winner of the Baldwin/Bechstein/Graves piano ensemble competition. She has been active as an adjudicator, clinician, performer and official accompanist for the Ohio Music Teacher's Association, and MTNA, and has served on panels and planning committees for the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy.
