Making Sense of the Applied Music Levels
2005-2006 Level System for UT Music’s Undergraduate Degrees
Courses Levels Level needed for Degree

MUS 2800

1

2

BA

MUS 4800

3

BE

4

BM

The problem with this system is that the levels were tracked within the department and not reported on the transcript.  Students were often confused about their degree progress.

Beginning in the fall 2006 semester, we will use a new system for tracking/showing progress.  All students will be able to see their degree progress on their transcript.

Beginning Fall 2006
Courses Pre-req Level needed for Degree

MUS 1800

Music major status

MUS 2800

2 semesters of MUS 1800 – B or better in each

BA

MUS 3800

2 semesters of MUS 2800 – B or better in each

BE

MUS 4800

2 semesters of MUS 3800 – B or better in each

BM

MUS 1810

for non-music majors

The old levels 1 through 4 will become MUS 1800 through 4800.  If you get a satisfactory grade, you will advance.  You can think of each applied music grade of B or better as one-half of a level.

Note: Music majors should register for at least a 2 credit lesson on their major instrument each semester.  BM students should register for 4 credits of applied lessons each semester.

Fall 2006 Applied Registration

When you register for fall 2006, you should sign up for the next logical step in the process.  Here are a few examples:

Student A
Semester Course Grade Level Comment

Fall 05

MUS 2800

A

1

Spring 06

MUS 2800

A

1

Jury committee awards level 2

Student A should register for MUS 2800 for the fall, because MUS 2800 is level 2.

Student B
Semester Course Grade Level Comment

Fall 05

MUS 2800

A

2

Spring 06

MUS 2800

A

2

Jury committee awards level 3

Student B should register for MUS 3800 for the fall, because MUS 3800 is level 3.

Student C
Semester Course Grade Level Comment

Fall 05

MUS 2800

A

2

Jury committee awards level 3.  Student signs up for MUS 4800 because in the old level system MUS 4800 was for levels 3 and 4.

Spring 06

MUS 4800

A

3

Student performed a good jury, and is now ½ way through level 3

Student C should register for MUS 3800 for the fall, because student C is still in the middle of level 3.  MUS 3800 is level 3.

Please consult with your applied teacher or adviser to determine which course is most appropriate for your next applied music course.
