Summer Jazz Institute

Realize your Jazz Potential...and Achieve it!

Summer Jazz Institute @  The University of Toledo
June 8-14, 2008

Three Areas of Study
Instrumental Jazz
Vocal Jazz
Teacher Training

The UT Summer Jazz Institute is the place where all levels of jazz students can discover and achieve their jazz potential through studying jazz in one of three exceptional programs: instrumental jazz, vocal jazz, and teacher training.

The curriculum is designed to provide fundamental, intermediate and advanced jazz experiences for talented high school, undergraduate and graduate college students, and teachers desiring to refine and develop the pedagogy of jazz.

The institute provides a positive and fun learning environment through lectures, master classes, jam sessions, and performances. Participants immerse themselves in improvisation, performance, arranging, and pedagogy with established professional jazz musician/educators as well as jazz masters including The University of Toledo’s own Distinguished Professor of Jazz and multi-Grammy winning jazz artist, JON HENDRICKS.

In addition to classes and ensembles, master classes, nightly concerts and jam sessions add to the jazz experience.

VOCAL TRACK
The vocal program offers a positive environment for vocalists to develop both their individual skills in jazz style, rhythms, and scat singing, and explore Jon Hendricks’ vocalese singing techniques. Ensembles include vocalist with a small combo and a large vocal group. Combining with the instrumental program for master classes, nightly performances, and jam sessions enhances the jazz experience.

TEACHER TRAINING
The Teacher Training program designed for present and future music educators interested in the pedagogy of jazz. Lectures and presentations include fundamentals of jazz style, methods for teaching improvisation, conducting a jazz band, and various other topics of jazz education and program development. Observations or participation with the Vocal or Instrumental programs in master classes and nightly concerts add to the pedagogical experience. Music educators may elect to perform in the ensembles, but are not required to. (See fee schedule for teacher’s fee discounts)
