Participation in three standard medical school courses:
Criteria for Acceptance
To be considered for MEDStart, students must have a minimum college grade point average of 3.7 and a grade point average of 3.5 during the student's senior year of undergraduate studies. The student must also have and ACT score of 29 or higher or an SAT score of 1250 or higher. Case Western's Dentistry
The College of Arts & Sciences and Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry offer a Special Admissions Program leading to both the baccalaureate and D.D.S. degrees. This program provides qualified Pre-dent students with an opportunity to complete both degrees in seven years.
Volunteer Work
Another strength of UT's program is the opportunity to receive college credit for performing volunteer work in a health care setting. There is also an active chapter of the national Pre-med, Pre-dent, Pre-vet Honorary Society - Alpha Epsilon Delta on campus.
Admissions
Direct From High School
For direct acceptance from high school into the program, applicants need:
Students not meeting these requirements will be admitted into the College of Arts and sciences in a major of their choice. After achieving a 3.0 or higher UT grade point average, students may apply to the Pmed/Pdent Adviser for admission into the program. Students with weak high school backgrounds, especially in the math and sciences areas, are encouraged to enter University College's Quest program for the first year and take courses to strength these skills areas. After establishing a solid academic performance, students are encouraged to meet with the Pmed/Pdent Adviser to discuss admission into the program.
Transfer Students
For transfer students to be admitted into the program, they must have a minimum of a 3.0 higher education grade point average to be accepted directly into the program. Transfer students not meeting these requirements will be admitted into the College of Arts and Sciences in a major of their choice. After achieving a 3.0 or higher UT grade point average, students may apply to the Pmed/Pdent Adviser for admission into the program. Transfer students are encouraged to refer to the College of Arts & Sciences general information regarding Transfer Students.
Employment Outlook
There will always be a need for health care professionals. Although there is currently a surplus of physicians in many of the medical specialties, there is a strong need for individuals interested in entering areas of primary-care: Family Practice, General Pediatrics, and General Internal Medicine. Also, in the future, there will be an increasing need for optometrists, and podiatrists as the Baby Boomer ages. Because of a shortage of health care professionals in rural areas, as well as some inner city areas, individuals interested in practicing in these under-served areas will find many excellent opportunities.
