The CTL Summer Faculty Teaching Fellowship Program provides several summer fellowship awards to full-time faculty in support of major course development or course enhancement efforts. A Fellowship awardee is provided with a $10,000 grant (stipend and fringe benefit support) for six weeks of full-time effort.
The award process is competitive. Typically the CTL receives 15-20 proposals and makes five awards. The proposals are evaluated by the twelve-member CTL Advisory Committee, which has representatives from all colleges.

Re: CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Deadline: January 22, 2008
The Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to call for proposals to its Summer Faculty Teaching Fellowship Program. In summer 2008 the Center for Teaching and Learning hopes to award five or more fellowships to faculty members in support of major course development or teaching enhancement efforts. The fellowship awards of $10,000 may support summer salary and fringe benefits. At the awardee's discretion, part of the award may be used for project-related travel, supplies, or equipment.
Guidelines
The CTL wishes to promote faculty innovation and creativity in teaching, and to allow course development and enhancements that would not be possible without this award. Although there are no absolute criteria, examples of projects that would be considered for fellowship awards might include:
* Proposals for new course development. Proposals for new course development that are interdisciplinary in nature, or involving the University Core Curriculum, or incorporating multicultural aspects/approaches are particularly encouraged.
* Proposals for course “re-development,” which might involve major modification or updating of an existing course, especially when this involves the development of new approaches to teaching and learning and the delivery of information.
* Proposals for course enhancement at all course levels are welcomed.
Proposal structure
There are no set proposal forms, but proposals should follow these guidelines:
1. The proposal should total no more than seven double-spaced pages, including the budget page.
2. Thirteen copies of the proposal should be submitted.
3. The proposal must include an evaluative endorsement letter from the department chair. This letter should comment on how the proposed assessment strategy (see #7 below) fits into overall departmental assessment plans. An endorsement from the college office (dean or associate dean), either in the form of an evaluative letter or by signature is also required. Deans and Chairs should recognize that their endorsements represent a commitment to offer the proposed new or redeveloped course.
4. If some of the award will be used for project-related travel, supplies, or equipment, then a budget should be included. The budget should indicate in detail what will be purchased, and the need justified.
5. A clear outcome should be stated and a time-line given for completion of the project.
6. Anticipated enrollment figures for a new or re-designed course should be explicitly stated.
7. Proposals must include an assessment section, describing the means by which the impact on student learning will be determined. To clarify this requirement, the CTL, following Palomba and Banta's Assessment Essentials (1999), defines assessment as “…the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development.” Please note that the proposal should describe how evidence will be gathered and presented in order to document additional learning that will take place as a result of the fellowship award. The actual assessment report, which will provide final documentation, should be submitted to the CTL within one year of the fellowship award. Awardees may be invited to give progress reports at CTL Advisory Committee meetings. Failure to deliver timely progress/assessment reports will result in disqualification for any future CTL funding.
8. The proposal should include as an appendix a brief (one or two page) curriculum vitae.
9. The Fellow is expected to devote six weeks of full-time work or its equivalent during the summer to the funded project. Applicants should specify the interval over which the work will take place and also list any additional teaching, research, or administrative commitments for summer 2008.
The Summer Faculty Teaching Fellowship Program is open to all University full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty, as well as full-time instructors with long-term renewable contracts. Complete proposals should be at the Center for Teaching and Learning office, CL 1005B, by 5:00 PM, January 22, 2008. Following proposal review by the CTL Advisory Committee, awards will be announced on or about March 1. Questions regarding the fellowship program should be directed to the CTL office at extension 2075 or to bernard.bopp@utoledo.edu. Resources relevant to proposal preparation (e.g., books/articles on assessment) as well as fellowship proposals from previous years may be viewed at the CTL office.
