T99031, Visiting Assistant Professor Position, American Sign Language
The University of Toledo currently enrolls approximately 300 students from a variety of colleges to fulfill a 14 hour foreign language requirement in American Sign Language.
Responsibilities:
The University is seeking to hire a Visiting Assistant Professor of American Sign Language within the Department of Special Education for a one year contract for the academic year 2008 - 2009 with the possibility of annual renewal for 2 additional years. The position start date is August 18, 2008. This is a nine month position, with potential for summer work. The applicant would be charged with teaching a variety of ASL classes and helping to develop program and course work leading to a Bachelor of Arts/Science in Education with a major in Sign Language Interpreting.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Ø A Bachelor’s Degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education or in a related field.
Ø Native or near-native ASL language skill.
Ø Educational and Community Interpreting experience.
Ø At least 3 years of teaching ASL.
Ø Able to teach a variety of ASL, Deaf studies and Interpreting classes.
Ø Excellent command of written and verbal English language skills.
Ø Excellent presentational skills when working in front of a large group of Deaf and/or Hearing people.
Ø Willingness to work with and seek out relationships with the Deaf community at the local, state and national level.
Ø A highly motivated teacher able to work independently or with diverse collegial groups.
