Program Overview
The department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biology in Cell/Molecular or Ecology concentrations as well as the dual degree M.S. in Education/ Biology for individuals interested in science education. The research and courses in the department emphasize cell biology, molecular biology, genetics and related areas. The department has three professors who have been recognized with Sigma Xi and University outstanding research awards. Many of the research laboratories in the department are directed by internationally known scientists. Included among these are editors of prestigious scientific journals and winners of research awards from international societies. The research laboratories are located in the $33 million Wolfe Hall.
Of Special Interest
Wolfe Hall houses state-of-the-art research laboratories for the Department of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and the College of Pharmacy. The facility cost $33
million dollars and was dedicated in 1998.
All of the biosciences faculty have their research labs on the third and fourth floors of Wolfe Hall. Graduate and students work side by side with faculty. Wolfe Hall is adjacent to Bowman-Oddy Laboratories which houses the teaching labs.
Curriculum Information
The Master of Science in Biological Sciences and the PHD program are designed to prepare students for research and advanced biology careers. Check the department website listed above for more detailed curriculum information.
Admissions Information
The department of biological sciences offers graduate degrees at the masters and doctoral levels. Students entering the MS or PhD programs are expected to have an adequate background in natural sciences and in mathematics. Usually, this will require knowledge of differential and integral calculus, college physics and organic chemistry. Students may be admitted on a provisional basis if they do not have adequate academic background, but they will be expected to acquire it rapidly. Students interested in the Cell/Molecular Biology or Ecology concentrations of biology should apply to the Main Campus, completing the regular admission application, including submission of all transcripts, 3 letter of professional recommendation, and a statement of purpose. GRE scores are required of all applicants. International Students, click here for additional requirements. Applicants for Fall admission to the Cell/Molecular Biology track should submit their application no later than February 15th for full consideration. Ecology track students seeking Fall admission should submit their application no later than February 1st.
