Program Overview
The MA in English with Concentration in ESL is intended for those preparing to teach at the college level in the US or abroad, in language training programs for the workplace, and a variety of other environments. (Note: this is not a literature degree with some ESL, but a completely separate track from our Concentration in Literature.)
The MA-Ed. in ESL is primarily intended for those already possessing valid teaching certificates / licenses who wish to add a master's degree specialization in English as a Second Language.
Of Special Interest
Special advantages of this program and graduate study at the University of Toledo include, close ties with the English Department Program in ESL Composition, the UT Writing Center, and the intensive English program of UT's American Language Institute, state-of-the-art multimedia and computer classrooms operated by the Department of English, a well-equipped campus library with on-line access to the catalogues of other state universities in Ohio (with borrowing privileges), a pleasant suburban campus environment.
Students typically perform their ENGL 6060 internship requirement via a community-service adult ESL teaching experience.
Department faculty members actively publish, present at conferences, and serve in leadership roles in professional organizations in the field. Students have also been regular presenters at conferences such as those held by Ohio TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and international TESOL.
Small class size promotes individual attention in advising, increased access to professors of ESL and those faculty in linguistics.
Toledo is a multicultural urban setting with substantial numbers of speakers of Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, and other languages; a nationally-recognized art museum; the Toledo Zoo; an extensive system of Metroparks serving the city and its environs; a lively arts community.

Both the MA and MA-Ed. require a grade of "C" or better in a 3000-level foreign language course. This requirement is waived for non-native speakers of English and may also be waived on the basis of an examination conducted by the Department of Foreign Languages.
Admissions
The College of Graduate Studies observes a priority deadline of January 15th for the purpose of ensuring that documentation is sent to the department in time for financial decisions for fall applicants. However, applications are processed year round and we offer rolling admissions. Applications are encouraged year-round.
