    Program Overview

    The Ph.D. program in Experimental Psychology offers a course of study preparing graduate students for careers in academic and research settings‚ as well as in a variety of non-academic research settings. The program emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. Individualized programs of study permit flexibility in constructing a graduate experience that fits the student’s goals and interests. Within the Experimental Psychology program‚ students work with faculty whose interests include behavioral neuroscience and learning‚ cognitive processes‚ developmental psychology‚ and social psychology.

    Of Special Interest

    Graduate students can learn to carry out research in such diverse areas as stereotypes and prejudice‚ cognitive processes in infants and young children‚ romantic relationships‚ judgment and decision-making‚ psychology and law‚ the formation of affect and emotions‚ personality‚ comparative differences in hearing processes‚ the effects of effort and secondary reinforcement on learning‚ and cerebral lateralization of perceptual‚ motor‚ and cognitive functions.

    Curriculum Information

    Ph.D. – 92 credit hours‚ thesis‚ written and oral comprehensive exams‚ and dissertation required. Students enrolled in the doctoral program earn the M.A. degree as part of the process of fulfilling the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. We do not offer the M.A. degree outside of the Ph.D. program.

    Admission Information

    Applicants must satisfy general admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies, Main Campus and should submit: an application‚ all college transcripts‚ GRE scores (general and psychology)‚ three letters of recommendation‚ a personal statement of research interests‚ and the application fee. In making our decisions about who to accept into our program‚ in addition to academic excellence‚ we stress the match between the applicant and one or more faculty members regarding their research interests.
