The College of Arts and Sciences offers Master of Arts (MA) degrees in the foreign languages concentrating in French‚ German and Spanish. The department of Foreign Languages also teaches content courses for students in Master of Arts and Education which is offered by the College of Education in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences. This degree is designed for students who wish to enhance their knowledge in the an arts or humanities field (in the this case Spanish) and in education. As a general rule, students will have an advisor in both colleges, who together will joinly direct the educational program.

Faculty in the Department specialize in Latin American Literature, Theater, Short Story, Chilean Theater, Theater and Dictatorship, 19th and 20th Century Peninsular Literature, Post Franco Novel, Spanish Detective Fiction, Spanish Film, Syntax, Spanish Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Spanish Applied Linguistics, and Foreign Language Teaching and Teacher Education.
Curriculum Information
A minimum of 30 semester credit hours are required for the Master of Arts and a minimum of 30 semester credit hours are necessary for the Master of Arts and Education.
For the degree of Master of Arts or Master of Arts and Education with a major in Spanish, students must meet the following departmental requirements: present an undergraduate major in Spanish from an accredited college or university; satisfactorily complete at least 18 hours of graduate credit in Spanish (including courses SPAN 5010 and 5110); satisfactorily complete an additional 12 hours in Spanish or in approved, cognate courses; pass a comprehensive examination; and demonstrate a reading proficiency in a foreign language other than Spanish. This may be done either by earning a passing grade in a foreign language course at or above the 3000 level, or by passing an examination administered by the department of foreign languages. A thesis/project may be presented for an additional six hours of credit in lieu of the comprehensive examination.
Admissions Information
We accept applications for our program year round. Fall applicants should apply to the graduate school no later than January 15th. Most funding considerations are made during the fall semester.
