    Faculty

    Primary Faculty: 

       

    Julie Coyle holds three degrees from the University of Toledo including a Master’s degree in Health Education.  She currently is a visiting professor in the College of Health Science and Human Service at the University of Toledo.  She has served as a visiting assistant professor and field experience supervisor for the Social Service Technology program in the past.  Julie Coyle is an Ohio Licensed Social Worker.  Coyle has provided social work services in acute care, home care, mental health, rehabilitative and long term care settings.  She is currently working with acute rehabilitation at St. Charles Mercy Hospital.  She has served as a court investigator in the Lucas County Probate Court and provided assistance for the initial curriculum development for court investigators in the State of Ohio.  Currently, she is a board member for the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the Fresh Attitudes Substance Abuse Treatment Center.

    Dr. Joseph Dake has been a part of UT faculty since fall 2006 as an Assistant Professor of Health Education. Prior to coming to UT, he worked at Wayne State University in Detroit. Dr. Dake teaches primarily in the School Health area and is involved in research pertaining to child and adolescent health issues. His most current research endeavors includes school bullying and pregnancy prevention. In regards to the latter, Dr. Dake is working with two other department colleagues on two different multi-million dollar grants that were granted to community agencies with the goal of reducing teenage sexual behaviors. He has published 15 articles in national journals and made 16 presentations at national conferences in 2006 and 2007. Dr. Dake is also active in the American School Health Association as a member of their Board of Directors and a former Chair of the ASHA Research Council and former Chair of the Council on Health Behaviors.

    Dr. Timothy R. Jordan has been a member of the U.T. faculty since 2001. Prior to coming to U.T., he was the Associate Director of Medical Education for Mercy Health System. Dr. Jordan is the Coordinator of the undergraduate Community Health Degree Program. Because of his work experience in school health, he teaches students in both the school health and community health degree programs. In the spring of 2007, Dr. Jordan was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and received tenure. During the same semester, he also received an “Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award,” one of four such awards given at the University of Toledo. During the last two years, Dr. Jordan has published 16 research articles in peer reviewed national journals and has made 6 presentations at national conferences. Dr. Jordan is currently involved in grant funded projects and research in the following areas: adolescent pregnancy prevention; preventing repeat teen pregnancies; prevention and cessation of youth smoking; reducing ETS exposure to Head Start children; and pediatric palliative care. Dr. Jordan is a member of the American School Health Association and the American Public Health Association.  

    Patricia Knisley worked as a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services for three years before becoming a lecturer. She currently teaches courses in nutritional science and personal health.  Knisley is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in Ohio, and is currently the Nutrition Coordinator for Cardiac Nutrition at the University of Toledo Medical Center.  She has worked as a clinical dietitian in several hospitals in Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as a nutrition consultant in private practice, and in the cardiac rehabilitation programs at The University of Toledo Medical Center and Flower Hospital.  She taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses at the University of Vermont as well as graduate courses in health care administration at St. Michael's College as adjunct faculty.   She holds a Master’s degree in Administration from St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., along with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati.

    Mirella Pardee is an Associate Professor in the College of Health Science and Human Service, division of Health and Rehabilitative Services.  She received her Registered Nurse diploma from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Toledo, a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from UT, and a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit.  She has taught in the associate degree nursing program at UT for many years and was also employed as an OB/GYN nurse practitioner part-time for several years.  She has recently been certified as an Instructor-Trainer for Emergency Response through the American Red Cross.

     

    Dr. James H. Price has been a professor at UT since the Fall of 1980. Prior to coming to UT, he was an Associate Professor of Health and Safety education at Kent State University. Dr. Price teaches primarily graduate level courses and coordinates the doctoral program. His most recent research endeavors are in the areas of tobacco and firearm prevention. Currently Dr. Price is working on three grants in the areas of adolescent sexuality and emergency room transfer of patients. He has published 11 articles and has 4 articles in press in addition to making 15 professional presentations in 2006 and 2007. Dr. Price has received the 2007 American Association for Health Education Scholar Award and the 2007 University of Toledo College of Health Science and Human Service Outstanding Researcher Award. He is currently the Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of School Health and a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on adolescent health issues.

    Mary Jo Seiber began her tenure at The University of Toledo 26 years ago as an Assistant Professor in the Associate Degree Nursing Program.  Prior to that time, she was a faculty member at the former St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, a diploma nursing education program in Toledo, Ohio.  She holds a Master’s degree in Nursing from the former Medical College of Ohio, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from The University of Michigan.  Professor Seiber joined the faculty in the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services in 2001.  She currently coordinates and teaches multiple section of First Aid.  Other teaching responsibilities include teaching courses in medical terminology and prevention and control of disease.  Professor Seiber also completed the University of Toledo Nurse Paralegal Certificate program and practices as a Legal Nurse Consultant for a Toledo law firm.

    Dr. Susan Telljohann has been a part of the University of Toledo school health education faculty since 1987.  She currently is the coordinator of the school health education program and is the associate chair of the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. During the 2006- 2007, Dr. Telljohann has co-authored one book, published 5 articles, and made 6 presentations at national conferences.  She also was a member of the National Health Education Standards revision committee which culminated in the publication entitled National Health Education Standards:  Achieving Excellence. Dr. Telljohann is an American Association for Health Education Board Member, is the Board President of the Polly Fox Academy, and is an Alliance for a Healthier Generation Advisory Board Member.  The most recent award that Dr. Telljohann received was the Howe Award presented by the American School Health Association.
