    Getting Started

The University of Toledo received approval from the Ohio Board of Regents in April 2002 for a baccalaureate degree program in Health Information Management. The HIM program is accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) education. The accreditation also covers students who already have baccalaureate degrees and are enrolled in the Certificate of Health Information Administration (CHIA) program. Graduates of the HIM and CHIA programs are able to sit for the national registration examination and earn the credentials of Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).  To view the website for the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the national association of HIM professionals, go to  www.ahima.org/careers/ or call 312-233-1100 for additional information.

High school students considering a HIM career can begin a foundation with the following courses: business, computer science, English, math, biology and chemistry. Within the State of Ohio, Tech Prep programs are in place for junior and senior level high school students who wish to pursue health care careers.  Ask your high school Tech Prep or Vocational Education teacher for additional information on allied health progression programs.

Remember to provide your name and address for application and material mailings and write HIM or CHIA in the attention line!
