Music, Art, and Theatre

ASSOCIATION OF TWO TOLEDOS COLLECTION, 1674-1980.
Organization created to promote cultural exchange between sister cities of Toledo, Ohio and Toledo, Spain, (1931-Present).
Collection includes scant proceedings (1974) and correspondence (1934-1944, scattered). Scrapbooks and scrapbook materials document early activities of the organization, first named Committee on Relations with Toledo, Spain. Scrapbooks incorporate photographs, newspaper clippings (in English and Spanish), and other materials on delegations sent to Spain to initiate cultural exchange (1934-1937) and miscellaneous Committee activities (1962-1971). The collection also includes maps (1976, 1930); certificates and awards (1934-1963); pamphlets, programs, and brochures (1930s); English-, Spanish-, and French-language periodicals, graphic arts, artifacts, and 54 books (1674-1977, primarily Spanish). MSS-071, 10 linear feet.

JOSEPH BISTAYI HUNGARIAN SOUND RECORDINGS COLLECTION, n.d.
Recordings collected by Joseph Bistayi, Hungarian-American resident of Birmingham, the Hungarian community in East Toledo.
The collection consists of twenty-two (78 rpm) recordings of Hungarian dances and Gypsy melodies. MSS-086, .25 linear feet.

JAMES BROWER PAPERS, 1949-1989 AND UNDATED.
Catalogs and other images created by Mr. Brower over parts of his long career as a graphic designer.  Includes catalogs created for Owens-Illinois and the Libbey Glass Comapny. MSS-220, .5 linear feet.

LOUISE BRUNER COLLECTION, 1967-1989.
Louise Bruner is the former art editor of the Toledo Blade. She was also a contributing editor of Art Gallery, and a contributor to American Artist and Antiques.  MSS-215, .25 linear foot.

FRANK H. CANADAY PAPERS, 1911-1976.
Advertising and corporate executive (1893-1976).
Collection pertains primarily to personal interests and activities, including travel, writing, music, and art. Programs and scrapbooks document Frank and his wife Molly's support of the Friends of Music, a Toledo organization which led to the creation of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in the 1940s. MSS-031, 18 linear feet and 2 volumes.

JANET M. DIXON PHOTOGRAPHS, 1940s.
Photographer residing in Toledo, Ohio during the 1930's, 40's, 50's, and 60's.
Collection contains 54 black & white photographs (51 x 41 cm and smaller) taken by Dixon in the 1940s. Subjects are men, women, and children of Mexico and Guatemala in everyday situations and scenes of the country side. MSS-051, 3 linear inches.

JAMIE FARR SCRIPTS, 1954-1984.
Actor from Toledo, Ohio (b.1934).
Scripts of television and motion-picture productions in which Farr acted. Includes most of the "M*A*S*H" (1972-1983) scripts from all but the first season, all of the scripts from the spin-off series "After M*A*S*H" (1983-1984), and scripts of several motion pictures, most notably, The Blackboard Jungle. MSS-024, 8.3 linear feet.

STEVE GORDON PAPERS, 1971-1982.
Toledo playwright/screenwriter, (1939-1982).
Papers include screenplays related to television and film work including the film "Arthur", fragments of screenplays, printed materials, and photographs. MSS-123. 1 linear foot.

ELIZABETH GOULD HOCHMAN COMPOSITIONS, 1945-1992.
Composer and piano teacher (1904-1995).
The bulk of the collection is scores with programs, posters and other printed material making up the rest. The scores were written for brass, string, and woodwind instruments. MSS-108, 4.7 linear feet.

ADAM GRANT PAPERS, 1957-1994.
Painter and holocaust survivor (ca.1920's-1992).
Collection contains exhibition catalogs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, awards, publications associated with the paint-by-numbers business, biographical material, drawings, and paintings (some of which were created for the paint-by-numbers business). MSS-106, 2.5 linear feet.  See also entries under

WARREN D. HANSCOM CHAUTAUQUA COLLECTION, 1927-1984.
Actor, impersonator, director, and producer on the Chautauqua and Lyceum circuits in the U.S. and Canada. Chautauqua was the first form of adult education: traveling entertainment that included lectures, music, plays, and other performances.
Collection consists of materials collected during Hanscom's career including clippings, newsletters, programs, a typescript, photographs, and two books. MSS-104, .5 linear feet.

FLORA WARD HINELINE PAPERS, 1900-1992.
Toledo, Ohio impresario (1879-1972).
Scrapbooks and autographed celebrity portraits documenting the Town Hall series of lectures; music and theater (primarily at the Paramount Theatre); and the Town Hall Theatre itself. Some noteworthy speakers and performers engaged by Mrs. Hineline include: Winston Churchill, H.G. Wells, Fritz Kreisler, and Eleanor Roosevelt. MSS-007, 3.5 linear feet.

PETE HOFFMAN CARTOONS, (1940-1990, scattered).
Alumnus of the University of Toledo (1941). Cartoonist for UT newspaper, Campus Collegian and art editor of Blockhouse yearbook (1937-1941). Creator of comic strip Jeff Cobb (1954-1978), illustrator of syndicated feature Why We Say (1950-1978).
Collection includes 130 drawings selected from Jeff Cobb (including one full episode, 1972), caricatures for Blockhouse (1940-1941); comic series Why We Say (1968, 1971); two promotional fliers, and 7 photocopies of drawings for UT class of 1941 50th reunion. MSS-050, 130 drawings.

HUNGARIAN SOUND RECORDINGS COLLECTION, 1982 and n.d.
Phonograph records, 33 1/3 and 78 RPM.
Recordings of Hungarian folk songs, instrumentals, and poetry readings with program in Hungarian and English with lyrics in Hungarian, recorded by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Columbia Records. MSS-111, .5 linear feet.

HERBERT WOODWARD MARTIN PAPERS, 1940-1999.
Poet and professor, University of Dayton, Ohio (b.1933).
Majority of the collection consists of correspondence from fellow writers, associates, former students, publishers, and family. Other materials include poetry in rough draft, typescript, and published forms, fliers and clippings, photographs, posters, journals, and ephemeral material. MSS-015, 095, 40 linear feet.

STEVEN PECSENYE COLLECTION, 1944-1983.
Artist, World War II Veteran (d. 1995).
300 original ink, pencil, pastel, and chalk drawings depicting people, customs, wildlife, and buildings of Hungry, many of which were made into postcards, included in Pecsenye's "Hungarian Coloring Book", or intended for other projects that never went to publication. Additional works represent other European countries as well as Toledo, Ohio ca. early 1900's. In addition to these drawings a large amount of correspondence in the form of V-Mail, newsclippings and other memorabilia dating from Pecsenye's service in Europe during World War is included in the collection. These materials chronicle in both words and pictures the events of the war from Pecsenye's perspective. MSS-084, 2.2 linear feet.

MARGOT SANGER PAPERS, 1920-1967.
Prominent Toledo socialite, performer, and author (1890-1967).
This collection documents Margot Sanger's career as a monologuist and later as an author, containing handwritten notebooks filled with poetry, prose and monologue scripts. Also included among these papers are newspaper reviews of her performances around the world, a description of how she talked her way out of a 1962 traffic ticket, and various photographs. MSS-140, .5 linear feet.

DENNIS SOLDNER COLLECTION, 1900.
Toledo resident, collector.
A collection of photographs taken by an unknown traveler on a trip around the eastern United States in 1900. Some of the areas represented are Toledo, Cleveland, Archbold, and Canton, Ohio; Brooklyn , New York; and Johnstown Pennsylvania. MSS-116, 3 linear inches. 

JOHN W. YAGER ASSOCIATION OF TWO TOLEDOS, 1958-1971.
Former mayor of Toledo, chairman of the Committee on Relations with Toledo, Spain (predecessor of Association of Two Toledos, an organization created to promote cultural exchange between sister cities of Toledo, Ohio and Toledo, Spain), 1966-1971, (b.1920).
Programs; publications; phonograph records of musical recordings; memorabilia and artifacts (Spanish coins, swords, armor, letter opener, and buttons); and scrapbooks. The collection documents the Committee on Relations with Toledo and the early years of the Association of Two Toledos. MSS-120, 1.5 linear feet plus swords and armor.

CARL AND JACQUELINE ZERNER AND FAMILY ASSOCIATION OF TWO TOLEDOS COLLECTION, 1981-1988.
Austrian immigrant to Toledo, Ohio, Attorney and past president of the Association of two Toledos, an organization created to promote cultural exchange between sister cities of Toledo, Ohio and Toledo, Spain (b.1913) and Activist and English professor (1927-?).
Collection contains pamphlets, programs, magazines, books, mementos and artifacts (Spanish dagger, flags, tie, sculpture, and armor), and visual materials (postcards and photographs) all related to the Zerners' involvement in the Association of Two Toledos. MSS-119, 3.5 linear feet plus sculpture and armor.
