An article on the Toledo ties of the poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar (1872-1906) is scheduled to be published in the March 2nd edition of the Toledo Blade (online and print) in the Arts section.
Dunbar, who wrote 12 books of poetry, as well as works for Harper's Weekly and the Saturday Evening Post during his brief career, was one of first renowned black poets in the United States and Europe. The release of his second work, Majors and Minors, which was published in Toledo, propelled Dunbar to international fame and his career blosoomed from there.
The article, which can be found here, was written by Toledo Blade reporter Ryan Smith. An exhibit on Dunbar can be found on Toledo's Attic and first edition copies of his works Oak and Ivory, Majors and Minors, and Folks From Dixie, as well as many of his other books of poetry. An excellent biography of Dunbar can be found here.
