The holdings of the Ward M. Canaday Center are housed in a secure stack area where environmental conditions are carefully monitored to insure a stable temperature and humidity within ranges appropriate for the preservation of special materials. Materials do not circulate outside the library. Procedures for use are designed to assure proper handling of materials consistent with the library's commitment to preserving its collections for future generations. In working with the collections, staff members regularly identify and treat items needing special conservation.
We encourage the use of our research collection to all qualified users. Holdings are reported as appropriate to national databases and catalogs, subject guides, and journals. The staff responds to inquiries received by mail, telephone, or e-mail and assists researchers who come to the library. In addition they make class presentations, identify materials suitable for course assignments, and work with the faculty of the University to facilitate students' use of the library's holdings.
The staff will assist you in using the prepared finding aids for the collections and will retrieve desired items for you. Rare books, manuscripts, theses, master's projects, and dissertations are accessible through the UT Library Catalog, Carlson Library's online catalog, and specialized indexes and inventories provide access to the University Archives. Users of the Center's primary resources are encouraged to consult staff members at an early stage in their research so that we may better assist you in your work.
