The University of Toledo Library was established as a department in 1917. Back then most of the material was distributed at various locations throughout the campus and Toledo. Finally, in 1931, all of the material was placed on the 5th floor of University Hall. During 1953, a new building was constructed next to University Hall that would house the College of Law and the expanding library collection. This building was eventually named Gillham Hall in honor of Mrs. Mary M. Gillham who was employed as a university librarian for 47 years.
By the time Carlson Library opened in April, 1973, Gillham Hall had very little space to store its 400,000 pieces of microform material. The Microfilm Reading Room, was moved to the lower level of Carlson Library. The lower level area was over 2,000 square feet, tripling the size of the old microform storage in Gillham Hall. Currently, Microform & Multimedia has over 1-1/2 million pieces of microform. July, 2006, the Microform & Multimedia department moved to the third floor, west side, of Carlson Library.
Our peak circulation year was 1990/91, over 65,000 microforms were charged out and nearly 140,000 photocopies were made from the material. We circulate thousands of pieces of microfilm within the department and through OhioLink and Inter-library loan requests. We have four, Canon, Digital Microform Scanners that will enable you to scan the microform image and save the digitized image to a CD or to your UTAD (University of Toledo Active Directory) desktop account.
Along with the microform, our multimedia consists of: VHS, DVD, CD and Audio Book collections. Stop by the department and check out any of this media, the loan period is one week. We also have media rooms equipped with DVD, CD, Audio tape, VCR players, and headsets for your use. We look forward to assisting you with your research, microform and multimedia needs.
