  • Brief History of Microform & Multimedia

The University of Toledo Library was established as a department in 1917. Back then most of the material was distributed at various locations throughout the campus and Toledo. Finally, in 1931, all of the material was placed on the 5th floor of University Hall. During 1953, a new building was constructed next to University Hall that would house the College of Law and the expanding library collection. This building was eventually named Gillham Hall in honor of Mrs. Mary M. Gillham who was employed as a university librarian for 47 years.

By the time Carlson Library opened in April, 1973, Gillham Hall had very little space to store its 400,000 pieces of microform material. The Microfilm Reading Room, was moved to the lower level of Carlson Library. The lower level area was over 2,000 square feet, tripling the size of the old microform storage in Gillham Hall. Currently, Microform & Multimedia has over 1-1/2 million pieces of microform. July, 2006, the Microform & Multimedia department moved to the third floor, west side, of Carlson Library.

Our peak circulation year was 1990/91, over 65,000 microforms were charged out and nearly 140,000 photocopies were made from the material. We circulate thousands of pieces of microfilm within the department and through OhioLink and Inter-library loan requests. We have four, Canon, Digital Microform Scanners that will enable you to scan the microform image and save the digitized image to a CD or to your UTAD (University of Toledo Active Directory) desktop account.

Along with the microform, our multimedia consists of: VHS, DVD, CD and Audio Book collections. Stop by the department and check out any of this media, the loan period is one week. We also have media rooms equipped with DVD, CD, Audio tape, VCR players, and headsets for your use. We look forward to assisting you with your research, microform and multimedia needs.

    Other Services

We have four digital microform scanners for microfilm, microfiche, and micro-cassettes. You may scan the microform image and save it on disc (we sell CD's here for $.50). If you are a UT student/faculty/staff, you may save the image to your own UTAD "desktop", then print it for FREE at any campus computer lab. If you want to make a print on our laser printer, it will cost .25 per print.

Borrowing (Outside of the Toledo area)

We provide "patron-circulation" through OhioLINK and Interlibrary-Loan requests through OCLC or use standard ALA form. If you would like to borrow reels*, fiche, microcards, or need photocopies from our collection, please place your requests through the Interlibrary-Loan Department at your local library and we will try our best to accommodate you. *Note: We do not lend out our reels of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Toledo Blade, Collegian, or The National Tribune, but we will locate the articles you need and provide photocopies through inter-library loan.

    Borrowing (On Campus)

Anyone may use the microfilm, microfiche, and microcards but you must be a student, faculty, or courtesy-card holder, to borrow VHS/DVD/CD and the loan period is one week with one week renewal. The over-due charges are .25 per day. Any media that is placed on "Reserve" for a class will be located at the circulation desk, and the loan period is usually 2 hours. If you have a group of 2 or more and need to view a video together, we have a group video-viewing room available. We look forward to assisting you with your research, microform and multimedia needs.
