Online Journals

The World Wide Web has become a major resource for information provision, and many publishers are using the Web to provide full-text access to their journals. The Mulford Library has access to many online journals from a variety of sources: the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center, aggregate sources like MD Consult and ProQuest, and directly from the journal publishers.

Finding Online Journals Available at the Mulford Library

The best way to identify the journal titles to which the Library has full-text access, check University Libraries Catalog, the online catalog (do a title search for the title of the journal. To see only what is available at the Mulford Library, after completing your search, from the View the Entire Collection drop-down menu choose Health Science Library).  If we have access to an online journal, the University Libraries Catalog will indicate what years are available full-text, list restrictions on access (some titles can only be printed by library staff members, for example), and provide a link to the site(s) where the full text can be obtained. If needed, the University Libraries Catalog will also provide you with the user name and password. If you need help searching the University Libraries Catalog by journal title, consult the The University Libraries Catalog help sheets that are available on the Library's web site or get help from Reference Assistance (see contact info below). The Library also has a database of online journals, however, it is not as current as the University Libraries Catalog. The online journal database is only updated every two weeks, whereas the University Libraries Catalog is updated continually. If the journal is not in the Univeristy Libraries Catalog, check the OhioLINK Catalog; there are journals available in the Electronic Journal Center that are not listed in the University Libraries Catalog.

Obtaining Copies of Full-Text Articles

Once it has been determined that the Mulford Library has access to a full-text article, follow the link to the site. There is no consistent format for publisher Web pages. Typically sites provide search and/or browse options to identify the articles of interest. Once the desired article has been located, you may be presented with a variety of viewing options. When given a choice, select PDF (also called Portable Document Format, Adobe Acrobat Reader, or Reprint Format). Articles in PDF are easily read and printed, and look just like a photocopy of the print article.

For articles with restricted access, contact Mulford Reference Assistance (contact information below).

Remote Access to Online Journals

When accessing full-text articles from off-campus, be aware that you will not be able to access all titles because of publishers' licensing restrictions. Access for some titles is restricted those who are on campus or who are registered with the Mulford Library.

For articles with restricted access, contact Mulford Reference Assistance (contact information below).
