Installments
It is possible to pay for ALI classes on an installment plan. Students who want to use the installment plan pay a small additional fee.
Except for the small additional fee, it is neither more expensive nor less expensive to pay on installments than to pay for the whole semester at one time.
Students who register for an entire semester pay between 5 and 10% less for each term than students who register for only one term. (Note: The fee for the summer term, which is one half semester, is approximately 55% of the normal semester fee.)
The payments on the installment plan are weighted so that a student pays more during the first term of a semester than during the second term. In a recent semester, the installments were approximately as follows:
| 1st pay | 2nd pay | 3rd pay | 4th pay |
| 26.8% | 26.8% | 26.8% | 19.6% |
This weighting may vary somewhat from semester to semester.
Payments are made on the 21st day of each month. A payment schedule is given to each student who chooses to use the installment plan.
Late Payments and Penalties
Students must make all payments on or before the due date. If they don't, they will have to pay a penalty of $25. The ALI will charge a maximum of three late payment fees on the same unpaid balance. After that, the ALI will send unpaid account balances to a collections agency. After one month of missed payments, students who do not pay will be dropped from ALI classes.
If a Check Comes Back from the Bank
If a student writes a bad check and it comes back from the bank, the student has to pay a fee of $25. Notification will be sent to the student's bank, or the holder of the student's account, and to the student. The student must clear the account within 10 days, or it will be sent to a collections agency.
If a student writes a bad check, he or she cannot pay for UT services by check for one year. All payments in the next year must be made in cash, money order, certified check, Visa, or Mastercard.
What Happens if Your Account is Delinquent?
Delinquent account means an account which has not been paid by the due date. Students with outstanding delinquent accounts may expect the following: 1) They will not be able to register for ALI or UT classes. 2) They will not receive transcripts. 3) They will not get diplomas. 4) The money due may be withheld from refunds, paychecks, grants, awards or other payments due from UT.
Students must take care of all financial obligations to the University if they want to enroll again in the future. Each term, each student must pay all the money due the University. This includes fees billed, loan payments due, fines, and any other financial obligations.
Refunds
If you have to drop your ALI classes, you may be able to get a partial refund. Check your ALI Student Calendar to see about refunds. You will see the last day that you can get a 90% refund. You will also see the last day that you can get a 60%. (Note: If you have an F-1 visa, you must remain a full-time student. If you are not enrolled full-time, you must leave the country.)
In-State Qualification
The ALI offers its services to the residents of the State of Ohio and Monroe County, Michigan at a reduced rate. Students who want to qualify for the reduced rate must prove that they are Ohio residents.
Students who enter the United States on any non-immigrant visa cannot be Ohio residents.
Students who think they may qualify for Ohio resident reduced rates should bring to the ALI any documents that may help them to prove that they are residents. These documents include: rent receipts, utility receipts, pay stubs, and Ohio tax returns. The easiest way to prove Ohio residency is to produce a completed Ohio tax return filed by the student or where the student is named as a dependent. If you have not yet filed an Ohio tax return, but are working full-time and studying part-time, you may qualify as an Ohio resident. You will have to produce pay stubs and a letter from your employer showing starting and projected ending dates. If you have questions about Ohio residency, make an appointment to see Mr. Peter Thomas or Mr. Stephen Perry in International Student Services.
Late Registration
Registration Day is usually two school days before the start of ALI classes. Students who register after that day must pay a penalty of $25.
