New ALI students take several tests when they arrive at the ALI. ALI teachers use these tests to place the students in the right levels and classes. First, students take the institutional TOEFL. (Sometimes students who have studied very little English do not take the TOEFL.) Then they take the special ALI placement test. This test has four parts: grammar, reading, listening, and a short composition. Finally, students in the upper levels take a pronunciation test.
Class Changes
During the first week of classes, the ALI teachers watch the students in their classes very carefully to be sure that everyone is placed correctly. The teachers sometimes find that some students are not in the right levels. At the end of the first week, the teachers have a meeting. They discuss students who they think may not be in the right level. Sometimes they move a student up or down in a certain skill or class.
If you think you are not in the right level, tell your teachers. This will help them to decide which level you belong in. If the teachers agree that you need to move, the teachers will make the move as quickly as possible.
If you think you are not in the right level, keep all your receipts for your books. Don't write in your books. That way, you can return them to the bookstore (http://www.bkstore.com/utoledo/) for a refund if you change levels.
