Probation
"Probation" means a time when the teachers are watching a student very carefully. A student whose semester GPA falls below 2.0 will be on probation the following semester. A student with a GPA below 2.0 at the end of the first term of a semester will receive a written warning about the possibility of probation at the end of the semester.
If a student is on probation, he or she needs to work hard to get a 2.0 GPA the next semester and to attend at least 85% of his or her classes and labs.
If a probation student's GPA for the following semester is 2.0 or higher, the student will be removed from probation.
If a probation student does not earn a semester GPA of 2.0 the following semester, he or she may earn the right to continue to study at the ALI as a probation student in two ways. 1) If the student's GPA for that following semester is 1.5 or higher but below 2.0 and if the student has 85% attendance, the student may continue on probation for the next semester. 2) If a student has one term in the semester with both a 2.0 GPA and 85% attendance but a semester GPA below 2.0, the student may continue on probation for the next semester. A continuing probation student must earn a 2.0 GPA to be removed from probation the following semester.
Suspension
A student who fails to meet the requirements above for getting off probation or continuing on probation will be suspended for one semester. The student will not be permitted to study at the ALI for that semester. A suspended student on a student (F-1) visa must either leave the country or find another school to attend. The student may not remain in the country without studying. A suspended student who wants to study at ALI again must submit a request for readmission to the ALI. The request for readmission (in writing) must be addressed to the ALI director and must show good reason for the director to grant readmission.
Dismissal
Dismissal from study at the ALI for one year results when a suspended student is readmitted but does not achieve a 2.0 GPA and 85% attendance at the end of that semester.
