Conversation Partner Program

You are invited to take part in an exciting opportunity to make a student friend from another country as you help that student practice English.
The American Language Institute’s Conversation Partner Program at the University of Toledo is designed to link American English speakers with ALI students to help these international students improve their English language listening and speaking skills while helping both develop cross-cultural understanding and friendship.
The partnership commitment is for one semester, although it can continue. The American and the international student agree to meet each week for an hour.
Upon receipt of your application you will be invited to a one-hour orientation for all American applicants. The orientation meetings are usually held during the first two weeks of September for the fall semester and during the two weeks of January for the spring semester. We will contact you with the details and directions.
You will then be matched and introduced to your ALI student at an on-campus evening event (“The Gathering”), which includes fun and friendship. The Gathering usually takes place at the end of September in the fall and at the beginning of February for the spring semester. At The Gathering you will have the opportunity to establish a regular meeting time that will work with both your schedules.
