    J-1 Professor/Researcher Scholar/Short-term Scholar Orientation
Welcome to the University of Toledo

    J-1 Professor/Researcher Scholar/Short-term Scholar Orientation Program

The Virtual Orientation web site will provide you with an introduction to vital University resources and the step-by-step orientation process for you.

    You cannot skip steps.
The steps must be followed in order.

    Step #1
Visit your department on campus and speak to your supervisor

    Step #2
Arrange an appointment to meet with Peter Thomas, Director of Immigration Services. Call 419-530-4229

He will verify that you have health insurance. Please bring your health insurance forms with you to the appointment!
Mr. Thomas will provide you with orientation information and also complete the I-9, which will be explained in next step.

    Step #3
    Mr. Thomas will:
    1. Complete your I-9
    2. Complete a social security number letter

    You need to bring your:

    • Passport
    • I-94
    • DS-2019

The I-9 determines if you are eligible to work on-campus. You will need to present the I-9 to the Human Resources Department.
If you will not be a paid worker on-campus, you will not need to fill out this form.

Also, if you do not already have a Social Security Number, you will be given a letter stating that you are eligible to receive a SS number. Take these items with you to the SSN office:

    • Passport
    • I-94
    • DS-2019
    • Letter from the OISS office stating you are eligible to receive a SS number.

The entire process will take approximately 10 days or longer for you to receive your SSN. Ask for a receipt from the Social Security Administration when you apply for a number. Take your receipt to the Human Resources Offices for your new employee orientation.

    Step #4
Human Resources will discuss and give information on many topics during orientation.
Some of those topics for discussion include:
    • Medical/Healthcare Benefits
    • Retirement
    • Life Insurance
    • Paychecks & Direct Deposit
    • Tax Forms
    • I-9 forms
    • Disability/Accommodation form
    • Employee Discounts
    • Recreation Facility Memberships
    • UT-MCO Credit Union.
    Step #5: Rocket ID Cards
The Rocket Card is the official University of Toledo Identification Card and provides safe, quick access to many campus service including:
    • door access to residence halls and academic buildings
    • meal plans
    • library privileges

Debit card features including the multi purpose Rocket Account, which can be used for books, food, and other goods and services are also available.
Since the Rocket Card is used with an "on-line" computer system your funds are secure even if the card is lost or broken.

The Rocket ID Card Office will ask you to give them an ID number. If you are a J-1 Scholar, a 99X-XX-XXXX number was given to you and this is the number you should use. You will be able to find this number on your DS-2019.

If you do not have an ID number (i.e social security number) you will need to go to the Rocket Hall Office of Undergraduate Admissions or call them at 419-530-1205 and receive a number from them. Present this number to the Rocket Card Office.
