Welcome to the new University of Toledo. On July 1, 2006, the merger of UT with The Medical University of Ohio became a reality and I am truly humbled to serve as the chairman of the UT Board of Trustees at such a key time in this institution's history.
The opportunities presented to us as a result of the merger are great. Under the leadership of President Lloyd Jacobs, this University is poised to grow - in size, in stature and in the role UT plays locally, statewide and nationally.
It is the responsibility of this board to provide a framework that enables University leaders to ensure that students remain foremost in our minds as we make decisions affecting their education. This board is committed to decision-making processes that encourage diverse discussion and debate, are inclusive rather than exclusive, and are transparent to both UT and external communities.
The merger brings with it a unique responsibility for this board. We must leave to those who follow us a clear road map of where we have come, a strong foundation on which they can continue to build, and a legacy of institutional greatness that will serve future generations.
The strength of this University has always been those faculty, clinicians, staff and administrators who dedicate themselves every day to improving the human condition.
Lastly, I would like to pay tribute to my immediate predecessors George Chapman and Dan Brennan, who successfully led The Medical University of Ohio and The University of Toledo, respectively, through this transformation. I would also like to recognize the efforts and contribution of past trustees and board chairs from both MUO and UT for the tireless public service they have provided in the quest for continued improvement of the institutions that they served.
