First Women and Philanthropy Grant Awarded

The votes are in and the majority of our members have voted to award Women & Philanthropy's first grant to The Carlson Library for the commissioning of an art glass piece to be displayed in the concourse. The artist for this piece will be Tom McLaughlin who is well-known locally for his wonderful glass sculptures. It is the belief of the grant application submitters, who included Dean John Gaboury, that this location will spotlight the sculpture to provide students with a balance of artistic appreciation and the highly technological focus found throughout the new Information Commons of the Library which provides reference and computer resources to the campus community. The sculpture will have a plaque signifying that the sculpture was a gift from Women & Philanthropy.

This first award emphasizes the importance Women & Philanthropy places on legacy gifts-something that will have a lasting impact on the University Community. We all are excited and anxious to see the final artwork designed for the Library.

To celebrate our first award, and to make the formal announcement of the award, Women & Philanthropy hosted a lecture and reception on May 29th at 5:30 p.m. in the Canaday Center of Carlson Library. The Special Guest Speaker, Ms. Jeanne Drewes, Chief of Binding and Collections Care in the Preservation Directorate at the Library of Congress will address the topic "Preserving Our Heritage."

The Board would also like to have another reception at the Library in the early fall when the sculpture is scheduled to be installed.
