When a student uses our screening for counseling service, they are not making a commitment beyond that one session. The screening for counseling service provides an opportunity for a student to discuss what counseling entails and to determine if this would be beneficial. If the screening counselor recommends individual or group counseling at the Counseling Center, the student would be assigned a therapist and would generally meet on a weekly basis for a period of time that is mutually agreed upon.
Staff members can help students explore, understand, and work through problems on a one-to-one basis. Individual personal counseling can help students find alternatives, expand choices and overcome obstacles that interfere with personal development and a sense of well-being. The clarification and resolution of personal problems often facilitate a student's ability to concentrate, increase clarity regarding academic direction and career choice, and stabilize and enhance relationships.
Can help students learn how to communicate more effectively with a partner, resolve conflicts and develop a more mutually satisfying relationship.
Group counseling provides a place to talk confidentially about your concerns. It allows you to share your concerns with other students who have similar issues while receiving support from group members and counselors. You also have the opportunity to learn about alternative ways of looking at personal problems. Lastly, you learn new ways of relating to others. The following support groups are currently available:
Anger Management
Anxiety Reduction
Depression
Body Image
Issues ranging from sexual orientation to coming out, sexuality, dating, family, and more
Survivors of Sexual Assault and Sexual Abuse
Other groups will be formed as needed

A consulting psychiatrist is available at the Student Medical Center location on a weekly basis. Referrals for psychiatric consultation and/or evaluations are initially made through the client's counselor or a medical provider. Those persons who are under the care of their own psychiatrist and would like the UT psychiatrist to monitor their medications must be seen regularly by one of our counselors or an identified counselor in the community. Exceptions to this policy can be made by the psychiatrist.
