    History

    History

The University of Toledo Men’s Ice Hockey Team, former 1992 ACHA Division II National Champions, are current members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II.  The ACHA is the national governing body for non-NCAA college ice hockey in the United States.  The University of Toledo Men’s Ice Hockey Team is not sanctioned by varsity athletics and therefore, there are no scholarships offered by the university.  This is why the team is commonly referred to as a club sport.  We represent the university like any varsity sport, traveling across the Midwest to play other colleges and universities however, we are responsible for our over $40,000 budget.  This cost is paid in part by the players themselves through dues and fundraising.  Team donations and player sponsorships are also accepted and greatly appreciated.  Players on the team must also be enrolled in nine credit hours per semester and maintain a 2.0 minimum grade point average in order to be eligible to play in the ACHA.

As mentioned above the team currently plays as an independent in the American Collegiate Hockey Association or ACHA.  This league was first established in 1991 in an attempt to provide non-NCAA college ice hockey programs with guidance and leadership on and off the ice. The ACHA has grown from the original 13 teams in 1991 to over 300 colleges and universities competing across North America in three male and two female divisions.  Every sanctioned ACHA program is eligible for the ACHA Regional and National Championship Tournament, which are hosted on the first and second weekends in March every year.

The Rocket Ice Hockey program has drastically improved within the past five seasons consistently playing a 30-35 game schedule against other top universities and colleges in North America.  These schools include the likes of The Ohio State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Michigan  Some of these schools do not have NCAA programs due to Title Nine or other funding issues.  Others simply have club teams in addition to their varsity hockey programs because of the overwhelming interest in the sport at those particular schools.   Thus, if you are serious about the sport of ice hockey and want to continue your skills and playing experience at the collegiate level, The University of Toledo is the right school for you!  If have any questions or concerns about the University of Toledo Men’s Ice Hockey Team, please feel free to contact Greg Urig, Team President, at greglurig@yahoo.com .
