We’ll discuss the definition of strengths-based advising, the connection between strengths-based advising and student engagement, and key differences between strengths-based advising and developmental advising. Your advisers will see how strengths-based advising shifts the focus from problems to possibilities; is based on a different foundation; frames tasks differently for the student; and produces different feelings in students as a result.

This Webinar will address the specific advising needs of sophomore students, including assistance with the major/career clarification process and promotion of resources that may further engage students in campus services. Special attention will be given to the developmental needs of sophomores. In addition, the session will feature examples of campus programs that have led to greater student retention.
About the presenters*: Julie Stockenberg directs first-year and sophomore studies and advising at Colorado College, where she has developed Sophomore Jump, a program specifically for second-year students. Ms. Stockenberg has designed innovative professional development programs for advising.
Laura Avila is responsible for the University of Washington, Seattle’s Individualized Second-year Advising Program focused on students who are not yet in a major. In addition, she serves on the Diversity and University advisory boards. Ms. Avila has presented on transfer and second-year student issues at regional and national NACADA conferences.

This Webinar will be especially for professional staff advisers and advising administrators, though faculty is also welcome to attend. It will discuss the importance of context, securing funding and resources, identifying advising models that work, determining the role of assessment, bringing stakeholders to the table, and effective ways to communicate with students.
About the presenter*: Tara Stopfel is assistant dean for academic advising at the University of Cincinnati, where she supervises the university’s advising center at its college of arts and sciences. She directs the Center for Exploratory Studies which has shown remarkable rates of student retention and student satisfaction since she established it and 2003.

His campus-based experience includes holding enrollment management positions at Baldwin Wallace College and Kenyon College. He has published widely. Virginia N. Gordon is past president of NACADA and the founder and first director of the National Clearinghouse on Academic Advising. She is assistant dean emeritus and adjunct associate professor at The Ohio State University. She has extensive experience in teaching, administration, advising, and counseling, and has published widely.
